Church History

First Presbyterian Church of Hannibal

In 1832 there were approximately fifty people in Hannibal and ten of them were Presbyterians. On August 19, 1832, Dr. David Nelson M.D. met with those ten Presbyterians in the home of Abner O. Nash, in the 200 block of Hill Street, to formally organize the Presbyterian church in Hannibal. Ten members formed the original body of the church, all presenting letters of regular membership in other churches. Now on Sunday mornings you will worship with approximately 140 to 160 members and visitors at our traditional service and we have volunteers working hard to make sure all visitors are welcomed and encouraged. Our congregation spans a range of ages and backgrounds. Our pastor dresses in a suit, tie and traditional robes, but you'll see people in the pews dressed in all styles —from jeans to business suits. FPCH offers classic worship that features traditional repertoire and excellence in choral and instrumental music. Our service lasts for approximately one hour. Near the beginning, the pastor will encourage you to greet the people sitting around you, but no one will single you out as a visitor. Also, we don't expect our visitors to give. So feel free to let the offering plate pass by when it comes down your row. Kids are welcome to attend worship services, but we also offer a variety of Sunday-morning programs for children, preteens, and youth. And fellowship groups offer adults a chance to connect in smaller groups.If you need to talk or pray with someone about a personal struggle, find Pastor Steve in the Library and he will be happy to speak with you about your needs.
Ten members formed the original body of the church, all presenting letters of regular membership in other churches. The ten charter members were: Abner O. Nash, Diana K. Nash, Matilda P. Nash, Pamilia P. Jones, Theodosia lnskeep, Tabitha lnskeep, Elizabeth Brown, Almyra Church, David Bills, and Emily Stewart. They gathered together to worship and in so doing the Presbyterian church became the first religious organization in Hannibal to meet regularly. We have been doing so ever since. By 1837 the village population had risen to between 400 and 500. Services were originally held in a small frame building near the river. In 1839 construction of a church was begun but thanks to measles and cholera epidemics wasn't completed until 1843. The first building on the present site was built in 1860. The political and social strains that later erupted into the Civil War were mirrored by splits in the protestant faiths and our denomination was no exception. Beginning in 1837, Presbyterians separated into a northern New School (N.S.) and a southern Old School (O.S.). Here in Hannibal, the church first left the Presbytery of St. Charles to join an independent synod which in 1843 associated with the N.S. General Assembly. It maintained this association until 1859 when the congregation voted to move to the O.S. church affiliation. It appears that in 1848, the 2 nd Presbyterian Church (N.S.) was formed and a building constructed at the location of the present library. The two congregations existed until 1873 when the two merged and became the First Presbyterian Church of Hannibal, located at the current location. The current structure was erected in 1894-95 and has been renovated several times, most recently in 1983-84.Few histories of the early years in Hannibal can be written without the shadow of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, “Mark Twain”, being cast across its pages and this is true here. The Rev. Joshua Tucker recalled that Sam’s mother was “a woman of the sunniest temperament, lively, affable, a general favorite…”, the father was quiet and spoke little. Sam first attended Sunday school at the Methodist church and tells us of those classes in his autobiography. Mrs. Clemens and his sister Pamela joined FPCH in February 1841 and Sam attended Sunday school. Years later he recalled that his mother also used the church as punishment, making him attend Sunday evening services to atone for some “exaggerated impropriety”. He returned to the church in 1890 to attend his mother’s funeral, and later visited one last time on Decoration Day (Memorial Day), 1902. Did he sleep in the church? We have no way of knowing for sure, but we have to believe that the elbows of his sister or mother found his ribs if he even started to nod off!

Hello and welcome to the website of the First Presbyterian Church of Hannibal, Missouri. My name is the Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Adkison, otherwise known as "Pastor Steve", and I have been serving the church in Hannibal as Minister of the Word and Sacrament since August 1, 2008.The First Presbyterian Church of Hannibal is a very loving, caring, and committed group of followers of Jesus Christ. We love to pray, and we pray consistently for others. We gather together regularly to enjoy fellowship with one another, to worship God in spirit and in truth, and to study and receive encouragement from the Bible. We have a very active children’s and youth ministry, as well as an impressive music program. Together, we find ways to serve others and to serve God. All in all, we seek to glorify God in all we say and do.In terms of my background, I was born in Russellville, Arkansas on December 15, 1968, and graduated from Russellville High School with honors in 1987. In 1992, I went on to graduate from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville with a degree in Speech and Theatre. However, it was during my college years where I received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior and to my surprise, I later received a “call” from God to go into the ministry, and so, I soon enrolled at and graduated from the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where I obtained a Master of Divinity degree in 1995 with an emphasis in Pastoral Care and Counseling. I have now just completed my dissertation and have received my Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. In terms of my family, I am the son of Bobby and Anita Adkison of Russellville, Arkansas, and the oldest brother of Kevin Adkison from Pottsville, Arkansas, and Mark Adkison from Hot Springs, Arkansas. I have been married to the former Pam Fox of Mena, Arkansas for 21 years. Pam is a wonderful wife and mother. We have two children; Hannah, who is a junior, at Hannibal High School, and Joshua, who is a 7th grader at Hannibal Middle School. I enjoy exercise, running and martial arts (holds 1st degree black belt in taekwondo and considerable training in Brazilian jujitsu). I enjoy playing the drums and guitar. And listening to and performing different styles of music. Also, I began training in 2004 to become a certified pilot. Along my faith journey, I have served God as a pastoral counselor, as a hospital and prison chaplain, and presently, as a pastor/head of staff. Since 1994, I have served churches in Indiana and Arkansas but am excited to be in Hannibal, Missouri.At any rate, we invite YOU to come see for yourself what God is doing in our midst these days.
